This we saw the sgraffito technique used to make animals which formed the base of lamps.
The technique involves placing a coat of colour onto the clay item in the semi-dry leather hard condition; then, after drying, cutting a design back into the clay item. The results were amazing, capturing the texture of fur, feather and scales.
It requires a high degree of skill to execute, but I feel should be more widely used as it does provide a unique and different texture to ceramic ornamental wares.
